UV-C light in the battle against COVID-19

As a flight school, safety is our main priority. The safety of our students, instructors and staff is the driving force behind the majority of the decisions we take. In 2020, the risk came from an unexpected corner: the invisible, very contagious COVID-19 virus. This virus forced us to rethink the way we were working before in the aircraft but also in the classrooms. Online lessons replaced classroom sessions but they have demonstrated their limits when it comes to interaction. Faced with the challenge of organizing classroom sessions safely, with minimal risk, we opted to go beyond the legal requirement of limiting the number of students per classroom. We opted for active elimination of harmful viruses and bacteria from the air through the use of indirect UV-C light purification.

“Because of the fact that the light is indirect, it poses no risk to the health of our students and instructors.”

The main classroom at Skywings Flight Training has been equipped with an “indirect UV-C air disinfection unit”. This unit can safely operate during classroom sessions as it does not directly emit the potentially harmful UV-C light into the room, avoiding direct exposure to people.

The UV-C technology has been widely used in medical sanitation, sterile work environments and water purification stations. It has now found a new purpose as an air purifier and more and more airlines rely on the technology as a fast and efficient way of disinfecting aircraft between two flights. Skywings Flight Training is proud to be the first flight school in Belgium to rely on the technology and we are happy to share our insights and experience with other flight schools to further enhance flight training across the industry.

How does it work?

UV-C radiation is a known disinfectant for air, water and surfaces that can help mitigate the risk of acquiring an infection and has been used extensively for more than 40 years. All bacteria and viruses tested to date (many hundreds over the years, including various coronaviruses) respond to UV-C disinfection. In laboratory testing, our UV-C light sources inactivated 99% of SARS-CoV-2 virus on a surface with an exposure time of 6 seconds. A clear indication that UV-C light can play a valuable part in your protection strategy.
